Nigeria’s aspirations for the 2026 World Cup faced another setback with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
After a disappointing first half, Victor Osimhen put Nigeria ahead in the 74th minute. However, Zimbabwe equalized in stoppage time, leaving the Super Eagles in shock.
Coach Eric Chelle maintained the same starting lineup that had secured a 2-0 win against Rwanda, but the team struggled with cohesion and urgency in front of a crowded Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, allowing Zimbabwe to contain their attacks.
The second half began with Nigeria showing more intent, as Ademola Lookman missed a chance by hitting the side netting. Substitute Tolu Arokodare also added vigor to the attack with a header shortly after coming on.
Osimhen’s goal, a precise header from an Ola Aina cross, sparked excitement in the stadium. Yet, Zimbabwe nearly responded quickly, hitting the crossbar after an initial save by Nwabali.
In the final moments, Tawanda Chirewa broke through Nigeria’s defense and calmly scored, securing a draw for Zimbabwe.
This match marked Nigeria’s fourth draw in six games, resulting in one win, one loss, and four draws overall. They currently occupy fourth place in their group with seven points, a significant six points behind leaders South Africa, who won 2-0 against Benin Republic. Rwanda and Benin are tied for second and third with eight points each, leaving Nigeria with four matches left to improve their World Cup qualifying chances.
